Bishop Shanahan Nursing and Midwifery Schools, Nsukka were established in 1952. The Midwifery Section was allowed to train Grade II midwives after due inspection by the then Midwifery Board of Nigeria. The Institution was opened with the first batch of twenty students in March 1952. She continued on this status until 1964 when it was inspected by the same body, upgraded and approved to train Grade one midwives. The war broke and the school was temporally closed. It was immediately opened after the war in 1970.
The Midwifery Institution over the years had been admitting students for a one-year midwifery programme until 2007 when the programme was changed to eighteen months. At a point in history, the number of nurses coming for Post Basic Midwifery training dwindled. Management applied for a change of programme which was acknowledged and approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. In February 2021, the institution started the Basic Midwifery programme with the first batch.
Academically, the institution had maintained excellence, scoring between 97 and 100% in the professional examinations for Midwives by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. In March 2011, the school had the most outstanding result in the Federation and produced the overall best student that year. The performance was honored with the presentation of plaques carrying congratulatory inscriptions of outstanding performance.
The Nursing Institution was established in 1964 for the training of General Nurses. In 2018, with the approval of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the Post Basic training for General Nurses commenced with 30 intakes. Progressively, the admission quota was moved from 30 to 50 and then 100 in the year 2023. The School has equally been upgraded to a College of Nursing Sciences and our Admission will now be through Jamb and the duration of training will now be four years. Academically, the institution had measured up to expectations performing well in the professional exams. She had won so many trophies in the inter-school Florence Nightingale’s competitions as well as various sports games.
